Frequently Asked Questions About Donating to PETA

What credit cards do you accept?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.

Can I make a donation in honor of someone? Or in memory of someone?

Yes, we gratefully accept donations of any amount made in honor or in memory of a special human being or a beloved animal.

Should you wish to make a gift in memory of a departed friend, family member, or animal companion, our True Friends Memorial Program will honor and preserve the memory of the special animals who were your true friends as well as those individuals who were true friends to animals.

Memorial donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. With a donation of $100 or more, your memorial will also be acknowledged on a special recognition page in PETA’s annual review, a keepsake publication highlighting our past year’s accomplishments in behalf of animals. We will, at your request, also send notification of the memorial gift to a family member or other individual you have designated.

Through the True Friends Web site, you also have the option of creating a free online memorial page.

Does PETA accept stock donations?

Yes, donating stock is an easy, wonderful way to help fund PETA’s programs to end animal suffering. For more information on the benefits of donating stock, please click here.

How much of PETA donations go to animals?

PETA strives to use our funds in the most cost-effective and efficient manner possible, a commitment illustrated by the fact that in 2023, nearly 83% of our operating expenses went directly to our programs fighting animal exploitation. PETA is effective as well as efficient, as you can see for yourself in our Annual Review at PETA.org/AnnualReview. Your membership will help us save even more animals in need.

I live in Canada. Can I get a tax credit for my donation?

Unfortunately, you can’t get a tax credit for your donation unless you have U.S.-sourced income.

Although PETA is registered in the U.S. as a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization, we are not registered as a tax-exempt charity in Canada. This is primarily because most of our animal rights protection campaigns would not be categorized as “charitable work” under Canadian law, which states, “According to common law, a purpose is only charitable when it provides a benefit to the public (or a sufficient segment of the public). In the context of animal welfare, the courts have determined that promoting the welfare of animals provides an intangible moral benefit to humanity in general.” That has been interpreted to cover animal welfare work (sheltering and rescue work) but not other animal rights campaigns, such as those that PETA undertakes. While PETA performs a great deal of welfare work, we do so with a focus on animal rights in order to end the cycles of abuse that animals endure.

For that reason, we are not a registered Canadian charity and, therefore, cannot provide you with a receipt for donations made directly to PETA that would be tax-creditable when filing your Canadian income taxes. If you’re considering a gift of $500 or more, you can contact us at [email protected] to discuss the possibility of a tax-creditable gift.

However, if you do have U.S.-sourced income, your donation would be tax-creditable with regard to that income.

We can assure you that any activities conducted by PETA in Canada fully comply with all Canadian and U.S. legal requirements and that we are working hard to put your contributions to the best possible use for animals in Canada, the U.S., and around the world.

To make a non–tax-creditable gift (unless your tax return includes U.S.-sourced income, such as U.S. dividends), please click here.

Can I make a gift to PETA in a different currency?

All donations through PETA’s website are processed in U.S. dollars, but you may be able to give in your national currency if you have a PayPal account. Simply visit PayPal, log in, and make your gift directly to [email protected]. You may also give directly through PETA’s Facebook page in the currency of the country associated with your Facebook account. PETA maintains a Canadian bank account, so you can make a gift by cheque to have the funds remain in Canadian dollars. Cheques can be made out to PETA and mailed to:

PETA
PO Box 7305 STN INDUSTRIAL PARK
Markham, ON L3R 7M8

Does PETA accept Bitcoin?

Yes. PETA can accept multiple cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), and more. Learn more and make a donation of crypto here. If you have questions, please e-mail us at [email protected].

How much of my money will go directly toward helping animals as opposed to going toward administrative and other nonprogram costs?

PETA is a leader among nonprofits with regard to the efficient use of funds. PETA undergoes an independent financial audit each year. In fiscal year 2022, nearly 85% of our funding went directly to programs to help animals. PETA’s fundraising costs are far below the “maximum acceptable” for the Better Business Bureau.

Why does PETA encourage people to donate fur garments?

By getting fur out of people’s closets, we also help get it off the streets and provide a way for former fur-wearers who have had a change of heart to turn something negative into something positive. We use the furs that are donated to us to create interesting displays and demonstrations to spread the word that millions of fur-bearing animals are cruelly killed every year to produce fur garments.

To donate a fur garment, please ship it to our office:

Attn.: Fur Campaign Dept.
PETA
501 Front St.
Norfolk, VA 23510

We do not have any other offices or drop-off sites that accept donated furs. If you know what type of fur it is, please make a note of it with your donation.

Donors are entitled to charitable income-tax deductions for the fair-market value of the donated items. PETA cannot legally determine the value of the item, but we will send a letter acknowledging receipt of the item. You might wish to have the item appraised before sending it or consult with a tax adviser.

How can I update my mailing address in your records?

You can update the information by calling 757-962-8242 or e-mailing [email protected].

I signed up for PETA e-mails but haven’t been receiving them—why not?

There are many reasons you may not be receiving e-mails from PETA. If you previously unsubscribed from e-mails and then filled out a form to rejoin online, a staff member will need to remove the block previously placed on your e-mail address. This system helps us ensure that we won’t begin sending e-mails to someone who doesn’t want to receive them. Please e-mail [email protected] if you aren’t receiving e-mails and would like to.

How do I make changes to my monthly gift (pledge) to PETA?

To change your dollar amount, gift date, billing address, e-mail address or phone number, please e-mail your request to [email protected]. To change your payment information, such as your credit card, bank account or PayPal details, please call 757-213-8757.

How can I get more involved with PETA’s work?

For lots of ideas on meaningful ways to help animals in your community and around the world, please visit PETA’s Action Center.

What is PETA’s federal tax identification number (also known as the employer identification number, or EIN)?

52-1218336

Where can I download additional financial information about PETA?

Detailed financial information is available through PETA’s 990 form and financial statements.

What other forms of payment does PETA accept for donations?

ApplePay, PayPal, bank account withdrawal (EFT/ACH), and wire transfer. For more information about any of these options, please fill out the contact request form below.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid E. Newkirk, PETA President and co-author of Animalkind
